For five hundred years one family has battled against good and evil. Plagued by a deal made by an ancestor with the Devil, they have been hunted and tormented by Mephistopheles, the voice of Satan. They have done everything to hide from him, even changing their name from Faust to Gerfallen, and leaving their home to start fresh in a new world.
Analiese Gerfallen was aware of her family’s past, and while this might be the twenty-first century, events from the sixteenth century still affect her family. She never thought removing a wall in an old Monastery in Austria would put her at the center of a larger struggle between supernatural forces of good and evil. Now with the new discoveries made, Ana is forced to fight for her family’s soul.
Her only solace has been working with the troubled teenagers who come through the doors of Bohlander House, including her newly adopted daughter. But when legal troubles regarding a former resident of the house begin to rise, she feels as if the Devil is attacking her from all sides.
With present day New York City as the center of the coming war, Ana must learn everything she can about Faust’s deal with the Devil. When a new ally enters the picture in the form of Erik, the new director of Bohlander House, Ana must decide if he can be an ally or was he sent to distract her. What secrets does Erik hold? Could his secrets aid them or divide them?
She must learn to trust others or the very teenagers she works and lives with could be placed in danger. The problem is Mephistopheles gives her few options in whom to trust as he attacks every aspect of her life. In mirrors, Mephistopheles can watch her as she moves about her day. Even in her dreams and thoughts, he is there lurking, twisting them. The only way Mephistopheles can win her soul is if she gives it willingly, something that Ana is trying hard to prevent.
The fight takes Ana and others to different earthly and supernatural realms searching in hopes to discover if the curse can be broken and ultimately—can a mortal kill a demon?
